NEW + OLD IN DTLA

T.D.D. STYLE FILES | 90s Vibes + MeDusa's Billie Bag
DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) is experiencing an influx of development, cultural experimentation and innovation, and along with all that new residents, ideas, and investment. The term gentrification is tossed around with most talk of the changes seen in DTLA over the past few years, and whether or not the term accurately describes the changes we are all witnessing and experiencing it has its uncomfortable and often negative connotations that are most certainly part of the conversation (how it affects the sizable homeless population, the displacement or "shoving out" of lower socioeconomic tenants and small businesses, the take over of big corporations, etc.). Intense discussion on complicated and delicate issues are part of the excitement and inevitable development cycles that surround urban centers—it's part of what gives them their draw and moves us all forward and upward as a community. That being said, the talk and changes are not all negative. There is a lot to be excited about with new life and it is palpable when spending time in the greater neighborhood. There is fascinating history visible all around downtown and the melding of a culturally rich past and unique traditions with out-of-the-box development and new-age creativity can lead to establishing DLTA as a global destination and positive urban development trendsetter. It is an interesting and exciting time for DTLA and hopefully we can continue the positive discussions, developments, and cultural revitalization because the DTLA community, both new and old, has a lot to offer.

*SPECIAL THANK YOU to our guest photographer (and DTLA resident) for this look, DIANE ABAPO, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SUSPEND Magazine.

LOOK No. 1 «« Repurposed Denim, Vintage Turtleneck, Brand New Billie »»
This look came together to complement DTLA's new energy and resurgence. Like the urban hub, the outfit combines elements from all pockets of the fashion map — the tried-and-true staple that has been around for decades and is perfect just as it is (see black turtleneck); the recycled item, reimagined to be fresh and on trend (see denim skirt that hours earlier was a pair of flare jeans from 2007); and the brand new beauty, adding neoteric flare with interesting lines and hues (see gorgeous cream Billie Bag from MeDusa).

Something about the classic combination of a turtleneck with denim brings us back to Gap ads from the 90s, in the best way possible. For us, the 90s were a time when we first began to care about the clothes we wore, when we started to pay attention to fashion trends, and realize the power of creativity in style and influence you can have with how you dress.

But one of the best parts about fashion is that it is ever changing and evolving and we all get to be part of the process. Keeping elements from the past and introducing them to new pieces is a little bit of trial and error, but it can sometimes result in a beautiful fashion friendship between old and new that just works. We took this new + old look out for a stroll with photographer Diane Abapo around DTLA; see the snaps below :)

T.D.D. VIDEO: NEW YEAR'S EVE COUNTDOWN | READY...

As it seems to happen too quickly every year, the holidays are upon us again and we are making our "Best Of" lists and next year's "Resolutions" lists. We are so excited to be wrapping up 2015 by sharing some fun new content. Recently we had the pleasure of being connected with MeDusa and are thrilled to show off a couple of their beautiful bags in the next few posts. Visit their website to see their unique, high-quality bags and accessories. We are particularly inspired by the gorgeous colors and designs in the new 2016 Collection - Reflections. Check it out!

We have been working on a video series aiming to capture the magic and excitement that surrounds New Year's Eve, or often any big night out around the holidays. New Year's Eve in particular carries the anticipation of a culmination and a start all in one—we say a determined so long to the year we are leaving behind and extend a spirited welcome to the one just beginning. The holidays seem to bring out more smiles and hugs, rekindle lost hope, encourage a little extra kindness, and suddenly we start to see and feel more love everywhere. Even if just for an evening, or for a moment, feeling loved and happy can make a world a of difference. Even though this season can also bring gift shopping headaches and holiday travel stress, ultimately we will remember the laughs and smiles and warm, fuzzy feelings inside. So why not celebrate and highlight this wonderful time of year :)

Take a look at the first installment of our video series: "New Year's Eve Countdown: Ready..."

More to come very soon... Happy Holidays!

CLASSIC COLOR, DAINTY DETAIL

T.D.D. STYLE FILES | Navy + Lace
The boho chic trend has stuck around for a while now and continues to adapt to trends that come and go—we all love a beautifully detailed Free People dress or darling Anthropologie print blouse. Wearing bohemian-, free spirit-inspired pieces allows us to indulge in the non-conformist wanderer lingering in all of us. But sometimes boho can overwhelm an outfit and feel too busy and scattered. Often all it takes is a hint of boho combined with a contrasting classic and simple style element—like the tried and true solid navy—to give the look the perfect balance between relaxed and bold.

LOOK No. 1 «« Navy + Lace: Two classics come together with new charm »»
Pairing a classic, strong color like navy with the detail of elaborate embroidery and fine lace makes this dress versatile and feel like it will be appropriate and flattering in so many settings. The dress was originally sought out as a bridesmaid's dress, but the purchase was a happy investment (unlike man bridesmaid's dress purchases) as it was clear this darling frock would be worn more than few times again after the wedding.

The three-quarter length sleeves and tea-length skirt hem evoke a level of modesty in the outfit, but without making it feel too conservative as the revealing mesh details add a hint of intrigue. Simple accessories complete Jen's look here: trusted felt hat, go-to black platform pumps, vintage bracelet and earrings... ready for lunch with friends or a family member's backyard birthday celebration :)

HELLO SWEATER WEATHER

HELLO SWEATER WEATHER | Bring On The Chill
While L.A. still hasn't cooled down to preferred fall temperatures, a few mornings have been delightfully cloudy and chilly enough to cozy up with wool blends and hot beverages. There is something comforting and relaxing about cool weather on the outside and being warm and toasty on the inside :) This beautiful Pendleton Woolen Mills blanket was a thoughtful gift that is already seeing lots of love at its new home on the couch. While most people have known the Pendleton name for decades, if you're not familiar with the brand take a look at the beautiful patterns and quality products that come from their mills in the Pacific Northwest—your fall and winter necessities list will grow after browsing their collection :)

T.D.D. VIDEO: But First, Iced Coffee | Happy National Coffee Day!

«« Cheers to National Coffee Day! »»

Here in Los Angeles the temperatures are still soaring despite the technical onset of the fall season. So, for now, our minds are still set on iced coffee as the coffee bean beverage that's satisfying our caffeine cravings. Yes — we are coffee addicts and take great pleasure in reading and touting every article or study that is published detailing the benefits of drinking coffee regularly (and, as would only make sense, we conveniently pay no attention to the naysayers or any evidence to the contrary). A good cup of coffee is that reliable little moment of happiness and fulfillment each day. When often so little is actually in our control and we can be overwhelmed with the complexities, surprises, and challenges that life tosses our way, there is true comfort and refuge in simple pleasures like watching the cream swirl and blend into the dark brown liquid, or inhaling the aroma of freshly ground beans, or taking a moment to just sip a cup coffee.

We hope that you enjoy your next cup of joe. Happy sipping, all! :)
